Google Fiber to Offer 25 Provo Nonprofits Free Gigabit Internet

Google Fiber and the city of Provo are looking for 25 nonprofit organizations to join Google Fiber’s Community Connection Program. The program offers Google Fiber’s one gigabit per second internet service for free.

Google Fiber’s Community Connections program will offer free internet with speeds up to 1 gigabit per second to 25 selected nonprofit organizations for ten years. The service would normally cost $70 a month. Provo Deputy Mayor Corey Norman says the free service is an opportunity for groups to increase what they can do for the city and community.

“That really is kind of the overall question is ‘you’re going to have access to a gig speed, what are you going to do with it? Is it going to add value to the community?” he says.

Norman says a citizen committee and city employees will help elected officials pick the 25 organizations. “This isn’t something that’s just going to be a directive from the administration; this is going to be something where the community’s going to actually be involved in making these decisions," he says.

Google will have the final say on which nonprofits are selected. To qualify the nonprofits must be based in Provo and need to submit an application that includes how they plan to use the one gigabit internet connection. Applications can be found at
