Robert talks with Larry Dale, the mayor of Sanford, Florida. In 1946, the town of Sanford kicked baseball player Jackie Robinson off a baseball field there. Now, the town wants to apologize to Robinson's family and to his former ball club, the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Mara Liasson Reports That President Clinton
marked the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier at a ball game Shea Stadium in New York last night. After courting racial controversy last term with his stands on welfare and affirmative action policy, the President is plans to devote more of his energy to race relations. He will unveil a major initiative next month...it will bring about no new government programs but will focus on encouraging dialog.

50 years ago this month Jackie Robinson became the first black man to play major league baseball, after signing a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. All Things Considered asked listeners to write and talk about their memories of Robinson. Today, on Opening Day, ATC listeners around the country remember watching Robinson play at Ebbits Field in Brooklyn, how his aggressive play intensified the game, and what his presence on the team meant to them.

But when major league baseball finally integrated, 50 years ago, Satchel Paige was not the one to do it.
