Earlier this month, Music Director and Jazz Host Steve Williams announced his retirement from the University of Utah. Williams has hosted the Nighttime Jazz music program on KUER public radio since 1984. His last day on-air will be June 30, 2015. Since 2001, KUER has focused its format on news and information programming – tripling its audience in the process. In looking toward the future, KUER plans to round out its news and information program schedule, reflecting the station’s mission to provide enriching and engaging news and information shows to listeners throughout Utah and beyond. KUER’s new schedule launches July 1, 2015.
NPR’s Here & Now will be added to the midday lineup from Monday – Thursday, in continuing with KUER’s mission to bring listeners throughout the state breaking news, in-depth commentary and engaging information programming. Here & Now will feature live news and information segments along with breaking news anchored by the hosts. KUER will continue to air The Diane Rehm Show Monday – Thursday from 9-10a where she hosts an in-depth discussion of current affairs, and the 2-hour Friday “News Roundup” will air in its entirety each Friday from 9-11a.
Monday – Thursday, 10-11a:Here & Now
A live production of NPR and WBUR Boston, in collaboration with public radio stations across the country, Here & Now reflects the world of news as it’s happening, with timely, smart and in-depth news, interviews and conversation. Hosted by Robin Young and Jeremy Hobson.
KUER’s weekday evening lineup will combine storytelling and narrative shows with BBC World News beginning at 10pm instead of midnight, allowing listeners the opportunity to catch the global news before the day’s end. To begin the evening, following the rebroadcast of RadioWest is q – a lively arts and cultural show featuring live musical performances and interviews along with panel discussions and debates on hot-button issues. Public Radio Remix will air next with a mash-up of some of the best stories and unheard pieces from podcasters and independent producers.
Monday – Friday from 8-9p: q
An energetic and smart mix of art, culture and entertainment features. Hosted by musician ShadrachKabango (Shad) - born in Kenya to Rwandan parents, Shad was raised in London, Ontario. He earned a business degree from WilfridLaurier University and a master's degree in liberal studies from Simon Fraser University. q features live musical performances, interviews, panel discussions and debates on a range of topics (sports, media, business, popular culture, news). Recent topics include celebrity activism, hip hop style from streets to runway, what it means to be trans-abled, Women’s World Cup, the poetry of Jihad.
Monday – Friday from 9-10p: Public Radio Remix
Curated in part by 99% Invisible (podcast) host Roman Mars, Public Radio Remix features some of the best and most engaging short radio pieces, interviews and audio documentaries produced by public radio, independent producers and podcasters. Stories are selected from Snap Judgment, This American Life, StoryCorps, The Moth, Radiolab, and a variety of podcasts including WTF with Marc Maron, The Memory Palace and Love + Radio.
The weekend shows give KUER the opportunity to broadcast some of the best programs available to our statewide audience. The weekend evening line-up begins Saturday evening at 7p with Live Wire!, followed by The Moth Radio Hour and NPR’s Bullseye. Sunday evening will start out with Reveal airing the first Sunday of the month, with State of the Re:Union airing the following Sundays in the same time slot. Beginning in January 2015, Reveal will take over the 8-9p time-slot with weekly episodes. NPR’s Ted Radio Hour will finish out the day from 9-10pm before resuming BBC World News for the remainder of the evening.
Saturday, 7-8p: Live Wire!
Music from up-and-coming bands, original comedy, performance and interviews with writers, filmmakers and comedians. Hosted by Luke Burbank (Wait Wait … Don't Tell Me!, Too Beautiful to Live), the show is taped in front of a live audience in Portland, Oregon. Recent guests include journalist Jon Ronson, Serial producer Sarah Koenig, actor Fred Armisen, author Cheryl Strayed, musicians: Jason Isbell, Horse Feathers, Reggie Watts, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down.
Saturday, 8-9p: The Moth Radio Hour
The Moth features true stories told live. At the center of each performance is the story – and The Moth’s directors work with each storyteller to find, shape and present it. Each show starts with a theme, and the storytellers explore it, often in unexpected ways. Since each story is true and every voice authentic, the shows dance between documentary and theater, creating a unique, intimate, and often enlightening experience for the audience.
Saturday, 9-10p:Bullseye
Hosted by Jesse Thorn, Bullseye is a public radio show about what's good in popular culture. With a keen editorial eye, Bullseye sifts the wheat from the chaff, featuring hot culture picks, in-depth interviews with the most revered and revolutionary creative people and irreverent original comedy. Recent guests include Baron Davis (NBA All-Star), Corin Tucker (from the band Sleater-Kinney), Kyle Kinane (stand-up comedian) and Vince Staples (“I am Big Bird”).
Sunday, 8-9p:Reveal
Hosted by Al Letson and produced in partnership with The Center for Investigative Reporting. Reveal examines what governments, businesses and communities are doing behind the scenes, hidden from public view – empowering the public through investigative journalism and groundbreaking storytelling. Reveal will air on the first Sunday of the month until January 2016, when it will be produced weekly.
Sunday, 8-9p:State of the Re:Union
Hosted by Al Letson, State of the Re:Union explores how American cities create community, and the cultural narratives that give an area its uniqueness. State of the Re:Union will air the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sunday of the month through December 2015, when it will be replaced with weekly airings of Reveal.
Sunday, 9-10p: Ted Radio Hour
A journey through fascinating ideas, astonishing inventions, and new ways to think and create. Based on TEDTalks from some of the world’s most remarkable minds. Hosted by Guy Raz. Recent topics include how curiosity leads to unexpected places, how to build a toaster from scratch, how genetics might hold the answer to curing autism, simple questions lead to big discoveries.
