The military trial of 51 suspects, including three Americans, accused of being involved in a May coup attempt in Congo has opened in the country's capital of Kinshasa.

U.S. officials have yet to make contact with Thompson and two other Americans two weeks after their arrest following a brazen attack on the presidential palace in Kinshasa, Congo.

Christian Malanga's son, Marcel, unsuccessfully tried to recruit many of his former high school football teammates to come along before 21-year-old Tyler Thompson agreed. Thompson and Marcel Malanga have reportedly been arrested. Their friend Daniel Gonzalez says Marcel had offered him up to $100,000 to work a security job on the trip.

Brig. Gen. Sylvain Ekenge told The Associated Press the third American was Taylor Thomson. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Thomson was among those arrested or killed on Sunday morning following the failed coup attempt.

According to the official description of events, three Americans formed an unlikely band under the leadership of Malanga, and eccentric opposition figure who dabbled in gold mining and used cars before persuading his Utah-born son to join in the ill-fated coup attempt. Six people, including Malanga, were killed in the attack early Sunday.
