Utah House Not Yet Discussing Impeachment of Attorney General

The Utah legislature is meeting this week for their monthly interim meetings but they don’t plan on discussing the fate or potential impeachment of Attorney General John Swallow.

Speaker of the House Rebecca Lockhart says she’s concerned about the recent allegations brought against Attorney General John Swallow and that they’re looking into how the legislature might address them.

Swallow Joins Other Attorneys General Backing Immigration Reform

Utah Attorney General John Swallow is encouraging Congress to enact immigration reform.  Swallow is part of a bipartisan group of 35 Attorney Generals who sent a letter to federal leaders calling for reform that improves the immigration system, keeps communities safe and protects borders. 

Swallow says drug crime, identity theft issues, and gangs tied to illegal immigration are threatening Utah’s safety and economy.

For Better or Worse, Utah Weighs in on Same-Sex Marriage

Utah Pride Center Executive Director Valerie Larabee is hopeful that same-sex couples will be able to marry in Utah.

The U.S. Supreme Court is receiving briefs from all over the country as it prepares to take up same sex marriage next month, including Utah.  The Court will hear arguments in two cases concerning the federal Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8.  The Utah Pride Center plans to file an amicus brief to the nation’s highest court this week, arguing that laws that ban same sex marriage amount to discrimination.  But the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Utah’s Attorney General have filed their own briefs in defense of traditional marriage and states’ rights to decide.

GOP Leaders Decide Not to Discuss Swallow Scandal

Utah Republican Party leaders decided to table a discussion about a scandal affecting Attorney General John Swallow over the weekend.  Swallow is being investigated by the US Attorney’s Office for allegedly helping business man Jeremy Johnson bribe US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Members of the GOP State Central Committee voted against holding a formal discussion on the issue, though some say it’s one of the most important issues facing the party.

Critics Demand Investigations of Utah's Attorney General

Utah Attorney General John Swallow sworn into office on January 7, 2013

The chorus of voices demanding an investigation of Utah's attorney general is growing.  The Alliance for a Better Utah is asking the Utah State Bar to look into accusations that Attorney General John Swallow helped to arrange a lobbying effort aimed at sidetracking a federal investigation of Internet entrepreneur Jeremy Johnson.

Alliance Director Maryann Martindale says, if what Johnson has been saying is true, Swallow could have violated ethical standards.
