Salt Lake City, Utah – When the opera Carmen premiered in 1875, it was the height of the Victorian age. You might not expect that a woman like the fiercely strong and independent title character would speak to audiences. But the writer William Berger says Bizet's work was casting aside conventions - not just gender and class roles - but the traditions of opera itself. The Utah Opera is performing Carmen through this weekend, and Tuesday, we're joined by Berger and others to talk about this enduring classic.
Utah Opera's Carmen continues through January 24. Tickets and information are available by calling 801-355-ARTS (2787) or clicking here via Utah Opera
