Democratic Gubernatorial Candidates Announce Running Mates
Both Democratic gubernatorial candidates announced their choice for lt. governor Monday.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Vaughn Cook has selected Jan Garbett to be his running mate. Garbett has been involved with several community boards, and until Monday morning, was a registered Republican. But Garbett says her experience outside of the usual political circles uniquely positions her to be a voice of the people.
“I don’t think it just requires people that are dynamic to change systems of political philosophies, but someone who is just generally concerned about how we can make our every day lives function better,” she says.
Meanwhile fellow Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Weinholtz announced that he has selected Kim Bowman to be his running mate. Bowman says he decided to join the ticket because he believes in the vision that Weinholtz has for the state.
“Clean air, education, taking care of people," he says. "These are the things that he’s been talking about for months that I truly believe this man is our next governor and he is the person who is going to put us on the path to make sure that we get to clean up that air, that we stop being last in the nation for funding our education, that we get to take care of Utahns in the way they really should be.”
Before today’s announcement Bowman had been running for a position on the Salt Lake County Council. He has now dropped out of the race and will support his Democratic challenger, Catherine Kanter.
