Republican incumbent Mia Love and Democratic challenger Doug Owens will compete against each other for second time for the congressional seat in Utah’s Fourth District.
Doug Owens lost the election in 2014 by roughly 7500 votes. On Saturday, his speech to Democratic delegates was mostly a video presentation, but he briefly appeared to rally support.
“Utah is ready for a leader who will put you first and not their own political ambition and together with your help, we are ready to win. Thank you,” said Owens.
Both candidates ran for their party’s nominations uncontested. Love touted her recent legislative efforts in congress and her collaboration with Senator Mike Lee on a project they call Article One. Love told delegates that she’s reshaping the way Republicans are perceived.
“As you all know we have a target on our back, because you elected a black, conservative, Republican woman and it really destroys the way Democrats like to describe and stereotype us,” said Love.
Both candidates hope state-wide interest in the presidential race will empower more voters to go to the polls in the 4th district.
