Savory Salt Lake 2016 Recap
Congratulations to this year's winners of our 5th annual Savory Salt Lake: HSL, Eva and Amour Cafe! The event was a huge success and showcased some of the best restaurants in Utah. Nearly 500 guests joined KUER staff, listeners and veteran judges Doug Fabrizio and Vanessa Chang along with Kelly McEvers, co-host of NPR's All Things Considered.
Public radio listeners and SLC foodies united to try small plates from 10 savory and 6 sweet food providers. Park City's Riverhorse on Main served up a chilled Maine lobster tail with a hint of sweet from candied cashews and citrus; The Tree Room at Sundance Mountain Resort featured their polenta agnolotti with a roasted leg of lamb; Tin Angel delivered a roasted duck salad; Provisions plated ahi tuna crudo with pineapple and a nori-sesame rice cracker; SLC Pop paired up with The Leonardo's Salt Bistro for a creative take on a vegetarian spring flower pot featuring baby radishes and turnips; Mazza plated a simple but delicious lamb kafta with eggplant medallions; Urban Pioneer Foods had a long line for their chicken korma steam bun with pickled slaw; and Zest SLC served up their vegetarian port-barbacoa tacos with cabbage slaw. HSL took home the Judge's Choice award for best savory dish with their creative English pea panna cotta with handle country ham, and Eva won their 2nd Savory Salt Lake award with the People's Choice winner for their Tonkatsu style pork in a five spice broth with pickled vegetables.
The evening's desserts were all to-die-for, starting with Cakes De Fleur featuring a simple but delicious chocolate-coconut cake with buttercream frosting; The Big O Doughnuts plated generous portions of their blueberry lavender and maple nut vegan doughnuts; Culinary Crafts served a vanilla buttermilk panna cotta with citrus in a mint and marjoram syrup; Sugared Caramel Candy wowed tasters with their sweet potato and vanilla stroopwaffles filled with sea salt and lavender honey caramel; and The Chocolate Conspiracy delivered a chocolate coconut mousse with berry compote. The star of the evening was Amour Cafe, wowing the crowd and the judges and taking home both awards for the evening with their apricot stracciatella gelato.
Guests sipped on a specialty rum cocktail from Dented Brick Distillery, Alpha Zeta Soave and Il Faggio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine provided by Vine Lore and 7 different types of beer from SLC's brand new 2 Row Brewing. The evening was also made possible with support from Sysco Intermountain, Living Home Construction and Design and Huddart Floral.
We want to extend a huge thank you to all of our donors, volunteers, vendors, sponsors and judges for helping to make the evening a success! We hope to see you back next year.
