Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants

By Jenny Brundin

Salt Lake City, UT – Last week, a national survey found the number of illegal immigrants living in the United States has grown by 25% over the past four years. It's estimated at ten million nationwide, and 90,000 of them live here in Utah. The U.S. Senate is about to take up the Real ID Act, which would all but prohibit states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. Earlier this month, Utah lawmakers passed a bill that replaces driver's licenses with "driving privilege cards" for undocumented workers that may not be used as legal ID. But some argue that two-tiered system ignores Utah's increasing reliance on illegal immigrant labor. KUER's Jenny Brundin reports.
