Count My Vote Launches Initiative To Eliminate Caucus Conventions

Count My Vote is launching a ballot initiative that would eliminate the party caucus-convention system.

“It’s what the voters want,” said Count My Vote’s executive director Taylor Morgan.

Morgan said moving to direct primary elections would improve voter turnout and ballot access.

“It’s been publicly debated for years and it is now time to finally give the people of Utah the final say on this,” he said.

Count My Vote filed its initiative with the Lt. Governor’s office on Wednesday. They’ll need to collect more than 100,000 signatures to appear on the 2018 ballot.

The initiative was originally proposed in 2013, but organizers struck a deal with the legislature to preserve the caucus while creating an alternative path to the ballot.

Morgan said the group is moving forward despite expected resistance from Republican lawmakers.
