Jay Horan is the interim Vice President of Human Resources for NPR.
Stepping into this role in October 2013, Horan partners with the CEO, leadership team and Board of Directors to set corporate goals for NPR and drive employee programs and initiatives that align with NPR's core mission and values.
Horan joined NPR in 2002 as Director of Compensation and Benefits in the Human Resources division and was promoted to Senior Director in 2012. In this role, Horan was instrumental in overhauling and administering NPR's retirement and benefits programs. He led the effort to reconcile and correct NPR's retirement accounts and thereby improving the accuracy and timeliness of the organization's 403(b) activity and later streamlined the 403(b) process for staff. Horan designed a new payroll system that incorporated real-time calculations of retirement benefits. His work to implement a new human resources management system moved NPR from a rudimentary payroll process system to a robust information and data system. Now employees have easy access to their own HR records and members of senior management have the data to assist in human capital management.
Focused on supporting the 800-person NPR staff, Horan was a key member of the team that brought a culture of wellness to the overall benefits program at NPR. In preparation for the organization's move to its current headquarters in April 2013, Horan helped select the vendor for NPR's in-house health clinic and led the contractual process with the fitness center and café vendors.
Prior to NPR, Horan was the chief financial officer at American Photo Booths, Inc., a start-up involved in the design, manufacture and placement of interactive photo sticker machines at retail sites. While at American Photo Booths, Horan implemented processes and financial controls to account for a 35 percent monthly growth rate in machine placements. He served as Vice President and General Manager of the industrial supplies distributor, Butts Ordway Company, where he instituted and developed a business planning and review process to track performance.
From 1988-1995, Horan worked at Granada North America, first as controller and then as director of business operations, where he was a member of the senior management team responsible for returning a division to profitability and initiated programs to reduce overhead, improve margins and increase productivity. As controller, Horan designed and implemented field sales pricing strategy to increase rental margins.
For four years before moving to Granada, Horan was the director of financial operations of Healthcare Television and Telephone, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operational accounting activities for hospital rental sales and service.
Horan earned a MBA from Suffolk University in Boston. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics/Accounting from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.
