The head of a charter school consulting firm was selected by Republican delegates Wednesday to fill the District 10 State Senate seat of Aaron Osmond. Lincoln Fillmore is the founder and president of Charter Solutions in Draper. He says narrowing the field from 9 candidates to one designee took a lot of time and energy.
“The county party, I think, put together a great event. We had a large turnout of delegates, I think larger than any of us as candidates expected.”
Fillmore says he’s confident delegates were informed and their voices were heard. He says he campaigned on a platform of education, federal overreach, and more help for disadvantaged Utahns.
“That’s where my expertise can come into play because I have a track record as a professional educator and working with public schools for putting dollars in the classroom where they do the most good,” says Fillmore.
Fillmore prevailed over Rich Cunningham after three rounds of voting with about 235 delegates participating according to a Salt Lake County GOP spokesperson. District 10 covers South Jordan, West Jordan and Herriman. Aaron Osmond resigned his Senate seat to head the beleaguered Utah College of Applied Technology. He declined that position after accepting a counter offer from his current employer; an education management firm. Governor Gary Herbert will review Fillmore as the delegates’ choice and likely appoint him to the Senate seat.
