Many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have considered resignation over the last few days. It’s a response to updated policies that say members in same-sex marriages can be kicked out, and that bar their children from being baptized unless they disavow same-sex relationships.
Leah Leavitt is heterosexual and was raised Mormon, but she was so outraged by these changes in Church policy, that she organized a resignation party at a bar in Salt Lake City over the weekend, where she says more than 80 people decided to remove their names from Church membership.
Before that event, though, Leah had a conversation with her parents, who are still devoted members of the Church. It’s partly because of her parents that she hasn’t resigned yet. It’s one of many difficult discussions going on across the Mormon community, testing relationships and faith. Leah and her father Gary Leavitt talk about what it’s like to have that conversation.
