Salt Lake City Police Department Receives $1.8 Million Grant to Hire New Officers

The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the Salt Lake City Police Department a grant worth more than $1.8 million. The grant will allow the department to hire 15 new officers.

SLCPD Detective Veronica Montoya says the department hires new officers about twice a year, and the grant will help them keep that pace.

“We usually hire between 20 -25 officers, so this is a way that their costs will be less because it covers them for 36 months,” she says.

Montoya also says having more officers on the streets means they can better deter criminal activity before it happens. The grant is from the DOJ’s Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services or COPS. The last time the SLCPD received the grant was in 2011.
