2002 Winter Games

What was the mood back in 1995 when Utah found out it would host the 2002 Winter Olympics? We asked longtime Salt Laker, and retired NPR national correspondent, Howard Berkes to walk us down memory lane.

Economic output looks promising for a second Utah Olympics, but a lot can change between now and 2034.

The International Olympic Committee says voting to confirm the expected Winter Games hosts for 2030 and 2034, the French Alps and Salt Lake City, respectively, is still the plan on July 24 in Paris.

Many other past Olympic hosts around the world have decided in recent years that bringing back the Games isn’t worth the money or hassle. But Salt Lake City remains one of the few places where Olympic fever still burns strong.

Bid organizers have touted Salt Lake City, which hosted the Winter Games in 2002, as the most ready and most flexible candidate to host in either 2030 or 2034. Decisions about 2030 are expected to come next year before the Summer Games in Paris.

After one term in Congress, Romney wants to step aside for a “new generation of leaders” in Washington.

The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute says “Utah’s demographic, social, and environmental factors favorably position the state to host another successful Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.”

If Vancouver bows out, it would leave Salt Lake City and Sapporo, Japan, as the two remaining candidates.
