The Colorado River Delta is almost entirely dry, but environmentalists are hoping they can keep getting water to restore habitats after a U.S.-Mexico agreement expires in 2026.

A coalition of environmental groups has proposed a set of new rules for managing the Colorado River amid heated negotiations about how to share the water supply, which is shrinking due to climate changed.

Salinity is an indicator of the Great Salt Lake’s health. During the historic low last year, salt levels were so high lake life was at risk.

Data collected during the annual Christmas Bird Count helps scientists identify long-term trends about different species.

The legislation allocates $25 million for the United States Geological Survey to monitor the Great Salt Lake, California’s Mono Lake, Oregon’s Lake Albert and other saline lakes.

“This is not one of our more fun projects,” said Tracy Aviary’s conservation director. But the survey helps identify species that are particularly vulnerable to building collisions.

The Saline Lake Ecosystems in the Great Basin States Act has passed the Senate. Now the vote is in the House with a busy calendar and the approaching end of the 117th Congress.
