The final 258-169-1 House vote on the Respect for Marriage Act sends the legislation to President Joe Biden, a monumental step in a decadeslong battle for nationwide recognition of such unions.

Utah voters have sent Reps. Blake Moore, Chris Stewart, John Curtis and Burgess Owens back to Washington, D.C. following a slow vote count during the Nov. 8, 2022 midterms.

The two candidates had strong disagreements on issues like education, abortion and the significance of Jan. 6, 2021.

His decision to skip the debate reflects a trend emerging in politics nationwide; while running attack ads and speaking to friendly media outlets, candidates and their consultants are deciding to minimize debate appearances or shirk them altogether.

Republican Rep. Burgess Owens announced Wednesday he would not participate in that night’s debate for Utah's 4th Congressional District. His Democratic and United Utah Party challengers went on without him.

Sen. Mitt Romney said she leaves “an exemplary legacy of devotion to her citizens, commitment to duty, and stability in times of turbulence.”

The Great Salt Lake Recovery Act would put $10 million toward monitoring lake conditions and exploring solutions to dropping water levels.

Despite GOP support for the bill in the House, it’s sure to face an uphill battle in the U.S. Senate.

“Reversing this trend will take a collective effort,” said Rep. Stewart. “This legislation is a great first step toward finding a solution, but our work is far from over.”

After polls closed at 8 p.m. on June 28, every current serving politician kept their race pole positions.
