In a party-line vote, the House sent a bill to the Senate that restricts housing for incarcerated transgender minors and also bans gender-affirming care for transgender adults.

HB269 requires transgender students to either live in dorms that match their sex assigned at birth or opt-in for a university-created “gender neutral” housing option.

Lawmakers said they’ve received hundreds of messages from people opposed to the bill, but it still passed the House on a 42-to-32 vote.

“We value our rivers and streams, wetlands, whatever it may be, our lakes,” said the bill’s Republican sponsor. “But trying to mix the idea that it's actually a human person is not appropriate.”
