Utah Sen. Mitt Romney broke with the GOP in February to vote to convict President Trump during the impeachment trial. So some Utahns were surprised when he stuck with his party Tuesday to support a Supreme Court nominee less than two months away from the presidential election.

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said in a tweet he will announce his plans for U.S. Senate on Feb. 15.

Romney linked to his website, which features a sign-up page for “Team Mitt.” The Republican would be running for the seat vacated by longtime Sen. Orrin Hatch.

Romney has made several public appearances around the state in recent weeks, including an agricultural conference in St. George.

Romney’s appearances have provided a glimpse into a potential platform for his Senate run. At a summit hosted by the Salt Lake Chamber on Jan. 16, the former Massachusetts governor praised the federal tax reform plan passed by Congress and said he is “optimistic” about the country’s economic future.

A recent Salt Lake Tribune poll showed Romney winning the senate race with 64 percent over likely Democratic challenger Jenny Wilson, who had 19 percent.

Romney owns a home in Holladay and is credited with turning around Salt Lake City's scandal-plagued 2002 Olympics.
