Salt Lake City, UT – They're not exactly canaries, but over the last few years Dr. Tyrone Hayes has found disturbing connections between ailing frogs and our own health. Besides a decline in the population and suppressed immune responses - Hayes has seen male frogs turned into females. The groups that are suffering are the ones that live downstream from our food production, and farm workers who are applying pesticides now have the offending chemicals in their urine. Tyrone Hayes is coming to Utah, and Monday, he joins us to talk about frogs, the chemical atrazine and what it means for us.
- On Thursday, April 23rd at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Tyrone Hayes will speak at the Salt Lake City Library. His lecture is called From Silent Spring to Silent Nights: Frogs as Canaries, and it wraps up the Utah Museum of Natural History's Nature of Things lecture series.
- If you can't make it to the library, it'll also be broadcast live on KCPW.
- Tyrone Hayes will also take part in the Museum's Earth Day activities, talking to visitors about the fragile world and its environment. That's Saturday, April 25th from Noon to 4:00 p.m.
