Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of American composer Harry Partch. He built unusual instruments to realize his dream of music freed from the bounds of Western harmonies — Partch died in 1974, but Dean Drummond and his group Newband have been keeping his music and instruments alive. We celebrate the Partch centennary with an excerpt from a demonstration of the instruments Drummond gave us in 1992.
