The Democratic candidate for Utah’s Second Congressional district is trying to make the case that her opponent, incumbent Republican Chris Stewart isn’t paying enough attention to all of his constituents.

Democratic candidate Charlene Albarran says she’ll do a better job of representing all Utahns in the Second District, which includes most of Salt Lake City and much of rural western Utah.

“The representation we have just represents a little sliver clear on the right wing,” Albarran says. “I represent the larger congregation of Utah and I stand up for many communities, not just a little community on the right.”

Though she’s running as a Democrat, Albarran paints herself as more moderate and someone who is willing to reach across the aisle. For example, she says while she supports moving toward clean energy, she’ll fight for Utah’s coal miners.

“I will protect their jobs. I do work toward clean energy—we have to work toward clean energy—but it very important, of utmost importance, to protect the jobs of the people of Utah,” she says.

Congressman Chris Stewart declined to provide a response.

He and Albarran are scheduled to debate on Oct. 4 in Salt Lake City.
