Comcast Launches Public Wi-Fi Network in Utah

Comcast

Comcast is launching a new public wireless internet network that will allow its customers to connect to more than one thousand Wi-Fi hot spots across the state for free. Non-Comcast customers will be able to use the service for a small fee. At launch the spots are located at places like restaurants and parks where people like to gather. Comcast spokesman Ray Child says as time goes on the number of hotspots will only grow.

“It’s a service that people can take advantage, customers can take advantage of wherever they are," he says. "And the vision is to continue to increase the density of the hotspots in a particular area, so we’ll have thousands, even tens of thousands of hotspots in Utah here in the future.”

The hotspots have a range of anywhere from 70 to 300 feet and will generally match the speeds customers get at home. Comcast has released an app for smartphones that helps locate the nearest hotspot.
