“We have done the hard things, never shying away from the heavy lifts,” Gov. Spencer Cox told the crowd. “Time and again, Utah has punched above its weight over these last four years.”

The state inauguration ceremony for governor will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. MT.

In 2020, Cox received 64% of the vote. This year he faced stiffer headwinds at the GOP nominating convention plus party squabbles that created an opening for write-in Phil Lyman and Democratic challenger Brian King.

Even though Lyman garnered over 67% of the final delegate vote, Gov. Spencer Cox will still appear in the June 25 primary after gathering the required signatures.

Carson Jorgensen left his seat as the leader of the Utah Republican Party, but he didn’t leave politics for good.

Utah hasn’t had a Democratic governor since Scott M. Matheson served from 1977-1985.
