Utah's Congressional Delegation Reacts Negatively to Proposed Iran Nuclear Deal

President Barack Obama has announced that the United States has reached a deal with Iran that will prevent the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon. But Utah’s congressional delegation believes it will have the opposite effect.

Republican Congressman Rob Bishop says the proposed Iran deal could potentially threaten the safety of America and her allies. He says one of his primary concerns about the deal is how it removes the economic sanctions placed against Iran.

“The concern is, if the pressure is off Iran and we don’t have good abilities to monitor what’s going on, we never will," Bishop says. "It also frees up a whole bunch of money which could be used for terrorism and also makes it a much more volatile situation in the Middle East.”

Republican Congressman Chris Stewart says even if members of his party are unsuccessful in stopping the deal, he has no confidence that Iran will uphold their part of the agreement anyway. He also says the deal will only delay Iran from developing nuclear weapons, not prevent them.

“The key to this is to keep the sanctions in place and to simply negotiate a better deal," Stewart says. "The President has conceded on some really, really vital issues on this agreement.”

Stewart also voiced concerns that the deal did not include other key players in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Isreal
