Lineup of Music, Comedy & Conversation Coming To New Eccles Theater
A new lineup of concerts and shows is coming to the nearly up-and-running George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake City.
When the brand new theater isn’t hosting touring Broadway shows, audiences will be able to attend concerts, talks and comedy shows beginning this fall.
Entertainment promoters announced the new 15-show lineup, dubbed Live at the Eccles, on Thursday. Some of the performances to look forward to include concerts by Morrissey, the Goo Goo Dolls and Johnny Mathis and shows by comedians Jay Leno, Kathy Griffin and David Sedaris. It also includes an acrobatic show and a lecture by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. See the full lineup here.
It’s all part of the plan to bring more people downtown to experience arts, dining and entertainment, “and then have them come back again, and again, and again,” says Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency CEO Justin Belliveau. “And we’re confident that with the completion of this new facility, we’re poised to do just that,” he says.
The new 2,400-seat theater is co-owned by Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County, and shows are booked by Magicspace Entertainment and First Tracks Entertainment. Chris Mautz is with First Tracks. He books concerts for The State Room and Red Butte Garden. Mautz says that until now, a lot of bands have had to skip Salt Lake City during non-summer tours because there weren’t available venues.
“We don’t have an indoor space that matches this,” he says. “And when we’re talking to bands, they can’t believe that for the first time, they’ll be able to come to Salt Lake City in a stunning new theater and be able to have a regular stop in the non-summer months.”
Tickets go on sale September 16th. The first show of the Live at the Eccles series is Seattle-based band The Head and the Heart. They’ll perform on November 2.
