Two public open houses are scheduled this week to give Salt Lake City residents a peek at what the city’s two new homeless shelters will look like.
City officials and ajc architects will be on hand to answer questions and address concerns at both gatherings. Tonight’s open house is at the Deseret Industries on 700 South. That’s the site that’s been designated for homeless women and their children. Thursday’s open house is from 4-6 pm at the High Street site a couple of blocks from Smith’s Ballpark. That center will serve a mix of women and men.
The buildings are slated for completion in 2019 when the existing downtown shelter will close. Each will each have 200 beds, courtyards, medical and legal clinics and even a barber, so clients won’t have to leave to get services.
The goal for city and county leaders is to cut down the concentration of homeless people in one area of town.
A third homeless shelter in South Salt Lake will serve only men. Design concepts haven’t been presented for that shelter.
