Proposition 1 Fails In Salt Lake County

Brian Grimmett

Salt Lake County voters have officially defeated an effort to increase sales tax for transportation funding known as Proposition 1.

The official Salt Lake County canvass did not change the election night results by much, as 51% of the vote went against Proposition 1. The measure would have increased sales tax in the county by a quarter of a cent. Some of the revenue would have gone to municipalities, some to the county, and 40% of it would have gone to the Utah Transportation Authority.

In a statement sent to KUER, Utah Transportation Coalition chair Abby Albrecht said her group is disappointed that Salt Lake County will not benefit from Prop 1. She also encouraged voters to continue to engage their local governments and UTA on the subject of transportation priorities.

Those opposed to Prop 1 are pointing to the amount of revenue that would have gone to UTA as the reason why people voted against it.

While Prop 1 failed in Salt Lake County, it passed in 10 others, including Weber and Davis counties. In total, 17 counties voted on the proposed tax increase this year.
