Painting a picture based on the classical ideals of the United States, Gov. Spencer Cox took time in his annual speech to address the national mood and highlight work that will “improve the welfare of the citizens of Utah.”

"My friends, we are so fortunate to live in this state at this moment," Gov. Spencer Cox said in his speech. "I submit that no state in this nation and no people in this country better reflect Franklin’s virtues than ours. Here we still believe in those old-fashioned concepts of order, temperance, justice, frugality, industry, humility, sincerity and, yes, even moderation."

Republican lawmakers want to save money, cut taxes and build more homes. Democrats are more focused on other parts of the household budget, such as child care and food security.

Among other judiciary changes, lawmakers will consider expanding the Utah Supreme Court by two justices. “We apply a presumption of good faith to the work you do,” Chief Justice Matthew Durrant told lawmakers. “I hope you will accord us that same presumption.”

Utah doesn’t have a detention center yet, so immigrants are held in some county jails and driven — or flown — to other states. There was a protest Friday against a rumored Salt Lake City detention facility.
