The president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Dallin H. Oaks, is expected to become the next leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after the death of President Russell M. Nelson.

Nelson was the oldest person to have led the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is remembered as a man of science whose presidency was marked by church growth and change.

As both presidential campaigns have stepped up efforts to win over religious voters in Arizona and Nevada, Dallin H. Oaks encouraged congregants at the faith’s twice-annual general conference to steer clear of contention and be peacemakers in their communities one month out from the Nov. 5 election.

The Utah native and descendant of Hyrum Smith had served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 1985.
