Provo is about to have a new mayor. While the race was close, challenger Marsha Judkins eventually came out ahead of two-term incumbent Michelle Kaufusi. Provo voters say Marsha Judkins ran a more tasteful campaign.

Both of the first-term incumbents, who ran on their opposition to tax increases, are in the lead to stay on the five-member council.

This year’s mayoral race was a rematch of the 2021 contest, when Randall defeated Hughes.

Several mayoral and city council candidates in Utah County have been endorsed by the county’s Republican Party. State elections director Ryan Cowley says these kinds of endorsements are above board.

The night before ballots were mailed, the two candidates for Provo mayor — Mayor Michelle Kaufusi and Marsha Judkins — met residents and offered their takes on the future of the city.

Incumbent Mayor Michele Randall faces a challenge in November from city councilor Jimmie Hughes. Both met in a debate at Utah Tech University the day before ballots were mailed.

Two incumbent city council members are also one step closer to reelection after the Aug. 12 primary election.

Seventy-seven Utah County residents are vying to fill the seats for three new district school boards. Those boards will be elected in November and will prepare the new districts to start operating in 2027.
